  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
  • Clean and protect chrome with light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

Home Fire Escape Plan

Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan & practice the plan twice a year. Tips for creating your home fire escape plan and practicing your 2-minute drill:

  • Everyone in your household should know two ways to escape from each room in your home.
  • Smoke is dangerous. Get low and go!
  • Decide where to meet once you get outside:
  • Get out and stay out. Never go back inside for people, pets or things.
  • If a fire starts, you may have less than two minutes to get to safety. So, time your fire drills and find out: what is your escape time?

Is your fire detector working?

Smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. Here's what you need to know!

  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.
  • Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
  • Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years.
